Churches hold Winter School in Bloemendal

Learners, teachers and organisers who participated in the successful, inaugural Bloemendal Winter School

The cold, rainy days of the first week of the June holidays did not dampen the spirits of 30 learners and a team of students, teachers lecturers and mothers of the Bloemendal Uniting Reformed and the Summerstrand Dutch Reformed Churches staging the first Winter School for Grades 10 and 11 learners of the Bloemendal area.

The programme included a workshop for parents on ways to support their children in their studies, a  morning session on study methods, a presentation on astronomy and classes in key school subjects. Students, teachers and lecturers from both communities assisted learners with their school work, and offered topics of general interest. The programme included a session where learners could share problems they faced with their studies, and a games session. Wonderful meals were prepared by a group of volunteers from the Bloemendal church.

The Winter School closed on Friday with a diploma ceremony. Participants agreed that the event should become a regular item on the annual calendar of the two congregations.  The steering committee plans to repeat the programme in the form of a Spring School during the September holidays.
