This past Sunday, we held our annual Kids Service, a celebration of the children in our local congregation and an opportunity for them to “take over” the adult service. Afterwards, we shared a meal together and there were fun activities and special treats for the kids. It has become a highly anticipated event in our calendar every year.
This year, the chosen theme was “Egypt”, and we were asked to come dressed as Israelites. Many, from the very young to the oldest, accepted the invitation and dressed up.
As we have come to expect, the service was both special and memorable — from the time worship started and a few of the bravest kids stepped onto the stage to demonstrate the actions to the songs we were singing, right to the very end when we left the building to go outside for our celebratory meal.
Something significant always happens when our children join us in the service, and families worship together. This time was no different.
There were two aspects of the service that stood out for me personally. The first was when our Children’s Church director asked the questions: What “Egypt” has the Lord brought you out of this year? Alternatively, what “Egypt” are you currently in, that you are trusting the Lord to bring you out of?
Questions simple enough for young children to understand yet at the same time, they provided the adults with an opportunity to dive deep into matters of their own hearts.
The second experience followed on directly from the questions: We were invited to walk through the “Red Sea”, which had “parted”, leaving behind our own personal “Egypt” with every step.
A prophetic action using sticks and blue plastic sheeting, requiring us to make believe like children, so that we could attach symbolic meaning to everyday objects, leaving no one untouched.
As I walked out of our Kids Service, I knew that I had met with God in a very personal way, and, as a result, I was changed. Free. Strengthened. Full of hope.
Once again, I was reminded that our Great God doesn’t require pomp and ceremony or perfectly executed items on a programme to show up for His people. It is the posture of our hearts that moves Him.
He will always show up when we invite Him in, ready to meet us right where we are.
