It seems that God Himself is doing something big to turn around Motherwell, a large, crime-ridden township on the northern outskirts of Nelson Mandela Bay, says Richard Crompton, senior pastor of Word of Faith Christian Centre in Gqeberha.
In just the last month Christ for All Nations (CfaN) have held a three weeks Gospel invasion there, and Christian and business leaders in Nelson Mandela Bay have begun taking hands with pastors in Motherwell who are committed to tackling spiritual and physical problems in the township.
Richard told Gateway News that his church’s growing involvement with Motherwell pastors was “all God”. He said the Lord clearly told him to attend a meeting at the Nelson Mandela Bay Business chamber to do with an intervention by the Church in the city aimed at addressing dysfunctional local government. He said it turned out to be one of the most productive and unified meetings they had ever had — and afterwards he learned there was another meeting and he decided to stay for that.

During the unexpected second meeting he said he discovered that “Mothewell is absolutely shutting the city down, having seven hijackings a week”. He heard that the regular tourist route to the Addo Elephant National Park, which passes through Motherwell has been taken off Google Maps and visitors to the park are being advised to use a longer, alternative route.
He said he was amazed by the news because it so happened that Word of Faith had been assigned to give discipleship training the next week to pastors from Motherwell who were partnering with the CfaN “Gospel invasion” campaign. Richard said he arranged for the Business Chamber “to come and present to them on crime and things like that”.
After the training Richard said he got talking with the pastors from the Motherwell Ministers Fraternal and found out that they wanted to erect crosses at the four corners of the township to replace altars where ANC leaders had for years made sacrifices to ancestors. He said he immediately understood there was a connection between the crime problem in the area and the altars. He told the pastors his church would sponsor four 6m crosses which are now scheduled to be erected at a spiritual cleansing event on October 5 on concrete plinths to be built by the fraternal. He said that at the pastors’ request he was also going to register them with his church’s Bible college and bring them up to speed with various national issues affecting religious freedom and the Church.
He told Gateway News today that he met with the Business Chamber yesterday and they had agreed to assist with the cleanup of Motherwell.

Jane Louw director of CfaN’s ongoing evangelism thrust in the Eastern Cape said Motherwell pastors had supported the “Gospel Invasion” significantly in different ways. A number of them attended evangelism training a week after the campaign and some will be going to a 6-day CfaN fire camp [intensive evangelism training] in Bloemfontein in October.
She said that apart from “all the miracles, salvations and spiritual things that were set off and imparted in the city”, an outcome of the evangelism campaign that should not be overlooked, is “that we have established a network in the fraternity that is really on fire for the city”.
She said she feels that Motherwell “is the well where God’s glory is going to just sprout out and cover the city. We know also that it’s a seed towards, not just the Eastern Cape, but also for the rest of our country and even in Africa. It’s a place where I believe a big revival is busy happening at the moment. People are set on fire and they’re going to run with the fire. And if you are burning, you cannot keep your mouth shut — you have to scream.”
Pastor Zola Moses leader of the Motherwell Ministers’ Fraternal recently told Gateway News that more than 400 pastors are actively involved in the fraternal and they were hoping to recruit more.
He said he believes that, in part, God sent the CfaN campaign to Motherwell to help them to pursue their plans to tackle spiritual issues that are fanning crime and social evils in the area, amidst the rapid growth of informal settlements.
