It was a freak accident that caused me to stumble and fall over some uneven bricks in our backyard on the first Saturday in January 2025, just as the sun was setting.
My knees instantly gave way and before I knew what was happening, I found myself face down. unable to get up by myself. Fortunately, my husband was at home and rushed to help me get up.
In that instant, my plans for the week ahead were changed. Work was no longer a priority. Instead, x rays, dental appointments and physiotherapy filled my days while I relied on medication to dull the pain.
Although my body told me otherwise, no bones were broken in the fall. Yes, my left wrist was badly sprained, and my two front teeth were broken. Apparently, the pain in my knees was just my arthritis revealing itself. But despite how I felt (and how I looked – my youngest didn’t want to look at me when I spoke as my teeth looked “scary”), I was overwhelmed with gratitude for the fact that it could have been much worse, and yet it wasn’t.
The only explanation I have, is that God intervened and “cushioned” my fall.
Brought to my knees
In the days that followed, it occurred to me that at the very start of the year, I had quite literally been brought to my knees and my smile had been taken from me. And it wasn’t only physically but mentally and emotionally as well. I had taken a beating, on the outside and on the inside. But my story doesn’t end there.
Like Oswald Chambers, I don’t believe in coincidences. He famously wrote: “The things that happen do not happen by chance; they happen entirely in the decree of God. God is working out His purposes.”
I believe that the Lord God, my father in Heaven is the author of my life and that He is writing my life story. This does not necessarily mean that my life will be smooth sailing or stress free; what it does mean is that He will be there every step of the way, strengthening me, encouraging me and enabling me to get back up again, dust myself off and carry on – with vision and purpose.
I am reminded of the Scripture in John 16 v 33: “… In the world you will have tribulation. But take heart; I have overcome the world.” These are Christ’s words, and they serve both as a warning and as an encouragement to us – difficult situations do not take God by surprise.
Fellow believers, we have been called to a great adventure with God. Let us hold fast and trust Him that when all is said and done, we will have a great story to tell.
