Christian singer and pastor Heinz Winckler has responded to a backlash against him in social media following news reports that he led a group of parents in questioning a decision by a Somerset West primary school to support the wishes of a transgender pupil to be treated as a female.

Speaking last Sunday to the congregation of the Lovekey church which he leads, he addressed what he labelled “wrong assumptions” that he said were responsible for him being branded a hypocrite, a hater, a transphobe, and not a real Christian on social media and in a petition which at the time of posting this report had 3 291 signatures

He said the questions he and the other school parents were asking were reasonable in the circumstances and were steeped in love. “Not asking questions would actually constitute not caring enough, which indicates a lack of love,” he said.

“Let me make it very clear to everyone in our church, and everyone that may be listening. I, my family, and the parents who I stand with love this child, our own children, and all the children in the school and those who come. And it is because of this love, that we are asking questions so that we can act in the best interest of the child in question, and can better equip and prepare our own children,” he said.
