Have you ever wondered why some days you have hope in your heart and some days you don’t?
I asked myself this question earlier in the week and honestly, I didn’t like the answer.
In a nutshell, what it came down to is that my hope for a particular situation I am currently facing suddenly increased when the circumstances took a more positive turn.
While I do believe that this is a normal response, I also know that as a believer I should not look to circumstances to dictate how I feel or how I behave.

To go back to my situation: What if my circumstances had not improved? Would the concern and consequent stress still threaten to overwhelm me?
I would have to say: “Yes”.
Not because hope was not accessible to me but because I was choosing to live in fear of what might happen rather than have faith in what God would do on my behalf.
Hope is indeed a choice. But it is not always easy to hope in the face of trying circumstances.

So, we must be intentional about cultivating hope in our hearts every day.
Jaimie Park explains that there are 4 keys to hope –
- Hope requires us to have an eternal perspective:
We need to have a vision for the long game, beyond what we experience now for when we live with eternity in mind, our perspective of the present begins to change.
- Hope is based on God’s promises and His character:
The Word of God abounds with encouragement for every situation we might face in life, reminding us of the hope we have in Christ, but we need to read it in order to receive it.
- Hope is built on faith:
Faith in an all knowing, all powerful and loving God Who does what He says He will do, is the fertile soil in which hope grows in our hearts.
- Hope activates perseverance:
When we have hope for tomorrow and beyond, we can better deal with whatever today brings because we know that it is only a matter of time before our circumstances change.
We who know the one true God always have reason to hope.
