As South Africa’s new Parliament was meeting for the first time last Friday, 50 singers were on top of Table Mountain to release Wake Up Africa — a new song for the nation by Join Bands Not Gangs (JBNG).
“And we didn’t put this timing together,” said Karien de Waal, founder of JBNG, and composer of the song which has been almost a year in the making.
“It [the song] was sponsored by the SONY Global Social Justice Fund, but it was an absolutely divine assignment. This past weekend we launched the song on the 14th of June from the top of Table Mountain with a group of 50 people singing.
“On Saturday we launched the song and the music video at the V&A Amphitheatre, including praise and worship in our setlist, and then on Monday we performed the song live on Expresso Breakfast Show,” said Karien.
She said she completed the lyrics of the song, which are based on Isaiah 60:1-3, while sitting in on a session by Pastor John Mathuhle from #Hope4SA at the Wilberforce Academy in January.
“So, the song was truly born out of the heart of God, if I may say so, and it is DEFINITELY a prophetic action in this time,” she said.
Karien wrote the bulk of the song, with Lebohang Kgapola and Allou April contributing to the lyrics.
“For the music video we felt the Lord send us on special assignments all across the Western Cape province. We had an intercessor blow the shofar at Cape Agulhas (the most southern tip of Africa) at sunrise and we set up a flag altar on that altar there.
“We had an intercessor blow the shofar at Cape Point (the most south westerly tip of Africa). We went to strategic towns and beaches as the Lord led, including Diaz Beach in Mossel Bay, where we blew the shofar, The Point in Mossel Bay where we filmed a family — of which the baby’s name happened to be Isaiah and he was born on Heritage day!
“We felt led to go to Napier and Montagu and include the NG Churches there. We also felt led to have flag dancers and a shofar in Oudtshoorn and a flag in Swellendam and Outeniqua Pass, George. We even found Isaiah 60:1-3 on the side of the hill at Oudtshoorn and flew our drone over it!
“The Lord also showed us to include lighthouses at Mouille point and Agulhas. And we climbed Lion’s Head to crown the Lion of Judah with golden flags. The entire video and song is one long prophetic action and an absolute NOW word for this Nation.
“The golden flags represent the anointing and the fire that needs to come from within the Church and spread among the people until everyone in our country can see the flags and hear the sound. We want our nation to Wake Up! The Lord is calling us to pray and to Arise and Shine! To take the Gospel out. I also believe the song is about healing the identity of our people. The lyrics were a download from Heaven. ‘Wake Up Africa. Wake Up Africa. You’re so beautiful. So precious. You are loved beyond measure. (Ephesians 3:19). Wake Up Africa!,'” said Karien.
