Athenkosi Mpiti, a 22 year old speech-language therapist at the Klerksdorp Hospital is running in the Sanlam Cape Town Marathon on Sunday to raise funds to attend a discipleship training school in Hawaii next year.
She said she asked God to rekindle the fire she once had and in her time with God he kept on prompting training and the discipleship school is where He led her.
“And when I finally decided on taking this bold step to do the discipleship training school, I truly felt the Lord prompt me to step out completely — out of all my comfort zones, to leave all that I have here and commit to the call, which led me to choosing to do the training in Kona.”
Her inspiration to run in the marathon, for which she won a ticket, comes from a deep childhood love of the outdoors and spending time with God in these spaces.
Athenkosi is requesting supporters to sponsor her per kilometre that she runs. Even as little as R1 per kilometre will come as a great blessing, she says. Her goal is to raise at least R20 000 towards the R100 000 cost of attending the discipleship training school for 6 months.
She says the verse that will be on her heartduring the marathon is Hebrews 12: 1-2 –– “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
Love offerings towards the training programme after the marathon or monthly sponsorships are welcome, says Athenkosi who can be contacted at +27 81 856 7073.
