Media school birthed out of prophetic word to Gqeberha church

Students brainstorming their upcoming film project

Ready, Aim, Fire — a media school that equips students with multimedia skills and a heart for Jesus — was birthed out of a prophetic word released at Oxygen Life Church, Gqeberha (PE) during the Covid lockdown period.

Jeremy King, 26, who leads the school, which equipped its first intake of 19 students this year, spoke to Gateway News about his journey with media and with God, which led to his role in the new media venture which he believes has been in the Lord’s heart for many years.

After high school he studied film and media at Media Village in Cape Town which is part of Youth With A Mission (YWAM), where he also completed discipleship training.

During this time he had an opportunity to work on a mainstream feature film.

“After that I was kind of set on going to Hollywood. In a sense I felt I needed to get accolades and influence before God would use me.

“And then it was just a real move of God in my own heart and just in the opportunities around me that saw me come and work at a local [Gqberha] production company as an intern, where I got exposed to a lot of documentary journalism in the humanitarian space. We did a lot of work for big humanitarian companies like Unicef.

“I actually had the privilege of traveling to 26 countries while I was there. I could never have dreamed of having that kind of experience and exposure. But even while I was doing that, I always still felt like I needed accolades to get influence,” said Jeremy.

But, he said, God started shaping his heart — showing him that his identity was not in his work but in Jesus, in His blood, in what He said over him and what He had done for him on the cross.

“And so, at a conference in Cape Town — it was actually a 4-12 partnering church conference — God really just started to reveal my heart and how I had drifted from dependency on Him. And so, afresh, I just submitted my life, my work, everything I was doing to Him.

“I went back and worked at the company and I didn’t have a plan to leave but God had a plan and He was moving in the background

“So, it was during Covid-19 lockdown when there was a prophetic word from one of our partnering churches about a media school being birthed out of Oxygen Life Church. And for years there had been a real witness of creativity in the church. It was never something we ran after or put as a main priority. But it was something that there was life in. So they’ve always stewarded just that life of creativity and just people using their gifts to glorify God,” said Jeremy.

He said when the prophetic word was released the church elders witnessed with it and felt like there was an urgency about it.

“So, Brad Verreynne, who leads Oxygen Life Church, gave me a phone call and he asked me what it would look like. And I’ll never forget that he said: “What are you doing with your life?” And I had known that God had really started changing my heart from that conference in 2019 — preparing the way.

“So, then, in obedience and faith, I stepped out to come and help shape the school and, along with the leaders, really just try and plot it and navigate it.”

Ready, Aim Fire media school was the outcome of those steps of obedience. This year the school ran a six month programme. And currently, enrolment is open for a one-year programme next year, including mixed media and film production while focusing on discipleship.

“We want to see students come in and learn technical craft at an excellent level but also to have their hearts and minds devoted to Jesus, devoted to eternity and from that devotion the fruit would flow of the stories that they told and the way that they work,” he said.

The 19 students of the inaugural class of 2022 included a student from the Netherlands and one from the Isle of Man.

“It’s been amazing to see God just grow and stretch us and add to our number. So I am really excited to see what God has in store for the next couple of years and seasons as we follow Him.
