Mkhize to speak at Cape Town religious freedom indaba

Dr Zweli Mkhize chairperson of the Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) parliamentary portfolio committee will be the keynote speaker at a religious freedom Imbizo at the Castle of Good Hope in Cape Town on Saturday. His talk will be on the committee’s work relating to the CRL Rights Commission’s Section 22 process.

The meeting, which will provide religious leaders with an opportunity to engage with Parliament, is being hosted by the All-African Reformed Transitional Liberation Council (ARTLC) under Bishop Templeton Mbekwa. The imbizo’s promotional banner directs inquiries about the event to Bishop Mbekwa and Bishop Thom Thamaga senior pastor of the Without Walls Christian Family Church. Both men are opposed to state regulation of religion proposed by the CRL Rights Commission and have expressed concerns about its controversial Section 22 Committee which was established to draft a self-regulatory framework and code of conduct for the Christian sector.

Freedom of Religion South Africa (FOR SA), a strong critic of the CRL and its Section 22 process, says while it is not involved in convening the indaba it will make a submission at the event. In a message to senior Christian leaders, FOR SA says that while the indaba is an important engagement, COGTA secretary Shereen Cassiem has written to them to confirm that the COGTA parliamentary committee will engage with the religious sector at a date to be confirmed.
