Namibian pro-lifers urged to attend public hearings on abortion

Pro-lifers in Namibia have been rallying religious and community leaders and young people to attend and speak for life at public hearings on whether to legalise abortion.

The hearings, hosted by the Parliamentary Standing Committee on Gender Equality, Social Development and Family Affairs started on April 15 in the Khomoas region and were scheduled to conclude today in Windhoek West. In Namibia, abortion is currently legal only when the unborn child threatens the life or health of the mother, is seriously disabled, or was conceived through rape or incest.

The hearings, meant to gauge the public’s stance on the issue, follow the introduction of a motion in parliament to expand Namibia’s abortion laws.
