Church leaders are invited to attend pre-screenings of the Heartlines movie ‘Nothing for Mahala’ from Monday September 23 to Wednesday October 2 at 17 cinemas around the country.
Heartlines hopes that the leaders will encourage their members to see the movie which uses comedy to address burning issues around money and materialism, when it opens in cinemas on Friday, October 4.
Churches are also invited to pick up a free 6-week Bible study resource comprising a leader’s guide, a DVD with clips from the ‘Nothing for Mahala’ film, and sermon notes. The resources will be available to churches from 68 distribution points throughout South Africa from the end of September. The distribution points include the Church leaders’ pre-screenings and Global Leadership Summit venues. The first set of resources will be free and more copies will be available at cost.
The movie and the Bible study resource are part of Heartlines’ “Values and Money” campaign that aims to reach 12 million people with a challenge to change attitudes, behaviours and skills related to earning, saving, spending and giving money away. Heartlines believes the change will impact on major social issues including crime, corruption, overspending and job creation.
Although Heartlines is best known for the films it makes, it is its printed resources that facilitate the real conversations, says Nevelia Moloi, a member of the team that produced the material. Each chapter in the 6-week resource has been tested with diverse focus groups, to ensure the content and language resonates with Christians from all walks of life. It was written by Julie Cunningham and edited by Moloi and Brian Helsby of Heartlines.
The resource focuses on the 5 money values of the campaign: Honesty in earning, Responsibility in spending, Wisdom in borrowing, Self-control in saving, Generosity in giving. It includes key Scriptures on each of these values and encourages Christians to ask themselves the question: Am I serving God or money?
The Nothing for Mahala movie is about a young man whose love for money gets him into trouble and into a clash of cultures with a grumpy old man who spent his life chasing money. Headline starts include Thapelo Mokoena, Marius Weyers, Desmond Dube, Mmabatho Montshe, Jamie Bartlett, Dorothy Masuku, Casper de Vries, Kenneth Nkosi and Lillian Dube. It was screened publically for the first time last night at a premiere event at The Zone, in Rosebank, Johannesburg.
