THE POWER OF CHARACTER IN LEADERSHIP by DR MYLES MUNROE

I have been involved in the development of church leaders for the past 40 years that I have been in ministry. This book is undoubtedly one of the finest that I have come across in the field of leadership.

Dr Munroe has brilliantly highlighted the vital importance of character as the basic foundation of all leadership – be it in the sacred or secular field of community, church, politics or business. He has drawn upon many years of expertise and experience, and has produced a really valuable and resourceful handbook that will certainly provide many insights for any existing or developing leader.

It is peppered with secular and Biblical illustrations. Whether you are in a private or public leadership role, the points, principles and precepts which are expounded upon, make for compelling reading. Any serious contemplation and application of the lessons learned is sure to result in a much improved quality of leader as a person in private, and in their leadership role in public life

The book is divided into four sections, with sub sections as follows:

Part 1        The priority of character

  • Character matters
  • Leaders of conviction

Part 2        The source of moral leadership

  • How character develops – what we believe
  • How character develops – what we value
  • How character develops – what we serve
  • The role of values in corporate life
  • The origin of our moral conscience
  • The power of principles

Part 3        Personal character development

  • Key concepts of character
  • Tempting your character
  • Core qualities of principled leaders

Part 4        Restoring a culture of character

  • Integrating vision and values

There are many quotable quotes in the book which left a marked impression on me personally. Here are a few quotes randomly chosen:

  • “Leadership is the capacity to influence others through inspiration motivated by a passion, generated by a vision, produced by a conviction, ignited by a purpose” (page 49)
  • “Conviction and character are therefore the distinguishing marks of a true leader” (page 65)
  • “Reputation is what others think about you. Character is the truth about you. Reputation is what you are in public. Character is what you are in private” (page 95)
  • “Our code of ethics is like a compass, pointing us to the goal we are moving toward” (page 107)
  • “Our moral conscience is like a compass….it has a true north that evaluates and confirms its accuracy so that we can be sure that we are steering the right course…this true north is the God of the Bible” (page 139)
  • “We manifest character when self-sacrifice for the sake of our principles becomes more important than compromise for the sake of popularity” (page 173)
  • “A brief overview of qualities in a leader…Strong convictions; Accountability; Humility; Integrity; Responsibleness; Discipline and Sacrifice” (chapter 11)
  • “Leaders stand for something – vision. Leaders stand on something – values” (page 215)

This book will be a prized possession of any leader intent upon improving their private and public profile! I believe that it will be of great value to you!
