Christianity is the majority faith in Uganda but former Muslims who turn to Jesus are under increasing threat of attack by Islamist extremists

Muslim extremists in central Uganda violently attacked a Christian teacher and his son, after first terrorizing the man’s wife in their home, Morning Star News (MSN) reports. Christianity is legal in Uganda but there have been an increasing number of attacks on former Muslims who turn to Christ by Islamist extremists enraged at their conversion.

In the evening of December 10, Abdu Muyinga and his 23-year-old son, Hamisi Sentongo, left their home in Mityana District to attend an all night prayer vigil in Kyanuna village, MSN reports. Muyinga’s wife stayed at home and was there when a group of Muslim extremists arrived at 10pm, demanding to see her husband and son. When his wife told them her husband and son were out, they “forced her to make a telephone call indicating that she was seriously ill,” Muyinga told MSN.

Muyinga and his son rushed home and found three men standing outside on the road. “I stopped, and one hit me with a stick on my shoulder, the back, the head, and left leg, and I fell unconscious,” he told MSN. “My son sustained slight injuries in the mouth, and his right wrist and hand suffered a fracture, making it very stiff. The attackers left us half-dead and half-naked.”

“We were attacked and beaten because of leaving Islam, as the Sharia [Islamic law] instructs Muslims to kill anyone who leaves Islam,” Muyinga said. “We survived being killed by the grace of the Lord Jesus.” Passersby found and took them to the clinic.

Having received repeated death threats prior to the attack, Muyinga asked in his statement to MSN: “Please pray for us, for God to heal us quickly to enable us to look for where to go.”
