More than 10 000 printed submissions on the controversial Hate Speech Bill were delivered to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) before today’s 1pm deadline for public comments, says Michael Swain executive director of Freedom of Religion South Africa. In addition about 48 000 submissions were made through the Dear South Africa platform and a further 10 000 submissions were sent directly via email.
“A fantastic result. Thank you for making your voices heard — this is a loud shout for faith and freedom!” said Swain. Watch his message below, which he shared from Parliament where he was delivering boxes of printed submissions.
Despite strong public opposition to the Bill at every opportunity for comment since its introduction in 2016 it was passed by the National Assembly on March 14 this year. If passed by the NCOP without amendments, it will only await the signature of the President before it comes into force.
“We sincerely hope that the NCOP will listen to the voice of the people.” said Swain, “As a new democracy, we cannot afford to return to the dark days of censorship of the Apartheid era”.
