What to do when you don’t know what to do –Vivienne Solomons

Spoiler: It starts and ends with God!

Sometimes in life, we come to a place in our heart where, having tried so many things to address whatever difficult situation we face but without success, and with no change in sight, we become discouraged, even demotivated and in some cases, depression itself may set in. In short, we come to the end of ourselves, limited by our own strength, our own power and our own resources.

And it often happens at this time of year. We may have started off the year in high spirits, hopeful that the issues we face will be resolved “this year”. But then time passes, and nothing changes, so we just run out of steam.

But (as I often have to tell myself in these situations) the Scriptures show us a better way of dealing with them:

  • Ask God for help:

Often, our first inclination is to run to others with our problems, seeking a solution, or worse, to distract ourselves with other things, with God being the last resort or stop. But if we humble ourselves and swallow our pride (much easier said than done), the Lord will hear us and intervene on our behalf.

  • Trust in God:

It is easy to trust God when everything is moving in the right direction, isn’t it? But when things go wrong, why do we hesitate to relinquish control even when our efforts have failed us? Trusting in God is a risk worth the taking – we have nothing to lose and everything to gain.

  • Don’t rely on our own thoughts or ideas:

If we are to ever find our way out of a difficult situation, we must acknowledge that we don’t have all (or any) of the answers – but thankfully, our God does, for He is omniscient (all knowing) and we can turn to Him at any moment.

  • Seek God for direction:

We can turn to many people and places for guidance, but it is (only) the Lord who gives (true) wisdom.

  • Stay close to God:

Difficult situations can drain us, leaving us stressed and exhausted. But when we turn to Him, we find peace that surpasses understanding and supernatural strength to sustain us.

My prayer for any of us going through a difficult time right now: “May we trust in the Lord with all our heart and lean not on our own understanding; may we in all our ways acknowledge Him, trusting that He will indeed make our paths straight (Proverbs 3: 5-6). Amen.”
