Church conference aims to impact mental health crisis

Madz Deyzel founder of Edify

The organisers of an upcoming church mental health conference in Johannesburg aim to make a positive impact on the state of mental wellbeing in South Africa.

The Made Whole conference which is taking place at the New Covenant Church, Bryanston (NCCB) on June 22 and 23 is addressing a health problem that in recent years has been taking a growing toll in South Africa and internationally.

Hosted by Edify, an organisation that equips churches to establish pastoral care and counselling teams, and NCCB, the conference is for anyone in the helping professions – pastors, ministry leaders, lay care, counsellors and anyone with a heart for helping others

The two-day event features 11 speakers who will lead 15 empowering sessions dealing with root issues which keep many people stuck – such as burnout, functional depression, medication, gender, addiction and cultural mindsets.

In a podcast conversation in which Edify founder Madz Deyzel is interviewed by Ashley Bell leader of the church, Madz says most people wait 11 years before getting help with mental help issues because they don’t understand the spectrum of resources that are available to help.

One of the goals of the conference is to make a positive impact on the national problem by equipping people to provide community care by engaging in effective discipleship conversations.

“When you invest in self care, community care, statistically, you’re actually addressing nearly 80% of the needs because not everybody needs to see a professional,” says Madz.
