God helps radio station team make song to encourage people struggling over Christmas

A month ago the idea of creating their first song — let alone music video — seemed like an impossible task to a team of creatives at Radio Tygerberg 104FM who were asking God what they could do to encourage people who experience Christmas as a difficult time.

But God!

Benescke Janse van Rensburg digital manager at the station tells how the impossible became reality. She says that when their creative team met about a month ago to discuss their Christmas project they sensed that God wanted them to create something for people who struggle during the Christmas season. The idea of an encouraging music video came up but it seemed undoable given the time constraint and the fact that they did not have a song or story line at that stage.

But they prayed and decided to simply trust God. And about half an hour after the team meeting, Lorrein Katzke. one of their team members and a seasoned radio announcer, called Benescke and said: “You know, I think I just wrote us a song.”

Surprised, because Lorrein is not a songwriter, Benescke read the words of the song, God of Never Alone, and sensed there was something special about them. She says Lorrein described the experience as “receiving a download from Heaven”.

After this, Jattie de Beer, music producer and singer of Douvoordag did the music production before the music video was shot. “I stand in amazement at the final product. It really feels as if we were just instruments in God’s hand to create this message to people who find themselves in the midst of a storm at the moment,” says Benescke.

The decision was taken not to involve celebrities but rather use radio presenters, listeners and friends of Radio Tygerberg 104FM in the music video to ensure that the focus remains on the lyrics at all times. 

“As a team, we hope that this song and music video will encourage listeners and also serve as a message you can forward to that friend of yours who is going through a tough time. May we be reminded that we are truly never alone,” says Benescke.
