Gqeberha church targets physical and spiritual wellbeing with health walk

The women’s ministry of the Church of Pentecost in Gqeberha hosted a vibrant and impactful health walk on Monday April 6, drawing over 150 enthusiastic participants from across the community.

The early-morning event brought together people of all ages, united by a shared commitment to promoting fitness, wellness, and community connection. Participants embarked on a refreshing walk along a designated route, supported by dedicated volunteers and traffic department escorts who ensured safety, coordination, and an enjoyable experience for all.

Attendees spoke highly of the event, describing it as both inspiring and energizing. One participant shared that the walk was “refreshing and motivating,” adding that it encouraged a renewed commitment to regular exercise. Another noted: “It was amazing to see so many people come together for such a good cause. It really encouraged me to take my health more seriously.” A younger participant highlighted the inclusive atmosphere, saying: “I enjoyed every moment. It was fun, and I got to walk with my family and friends from church while doing something good for my health” said Ndiyabulela Aboagye who is a member of The Church of Pentecost, Gqeberha.

Following the walk, participants benefited from a series of health screenings, including blood pressure checks and other general wellness assessments. Qualified nurses were on site to provide medical advice, helping attendees gain valuable insight into their health and encouraging them to make proactive lifestyle choices. One beneficiary remarked: “I didn’t realise how important these checks are. Most of us usually wait till we get sick before we think of our health, I am grateful for this day.”

The event was supported by a range of sponsors and partners. Splash Water, based in Western Road, contributed as one of the initial sponsors, while various local banks and Virgin Active were present to engage with participants and offer their services. Additional financial support from church members helped to fund some of the key elements of the event, including a lively brass band, PE Band Boys, that ushered them with energized praise melodies.

Despite its success, the event was not without challenges. Organisers faced difficulties securing medical personnel, but in what was described as a “miracle,” nurses became available at the eleventh hour. Belinda, one of the main organisers, reflected on the journey: “Planning this event was very challenging and at times stressful, but it turned out to be a beautiful day. God came through when we needed it most. I thank Him for the wisdom and guidance, even when I felt like I had reached a dead end” said Belinda Afia Adjei.

She also expressed her gratitude for the support of the church’s leadership, adding: “I am deeply grateful for the support of our pastor, Dr Martin Appiah, who has walked this journey with us and sacrificed his precious time to make sure that this event is a success.”

The day concluded with a fellowship breakfast at IZA Restaurant, allowing participants to connect and reflect before proceeding with the health screenings.

A representative from the Women’s Ministry emphasised that the initiative goes beyond physical fitness: “As a ministry, we are committed not only to spiritual growth but also to the physical well-being of our community. We wanted to bring people together beyond church borders and create awareness around healthy lifestyles” said Esther Otchere-Boateng.

Encouraged by the overwhelming response, the ministry is now exploring possibilities to launch a community health club open to the public. The initiative may include regular Saturday morning walks or runs aimed at sustaining the momentum and promoting long-term wellness within the community.

Organisers expressed heartfelt appreciation for the strong turnout and collective support, noting that the event was a huge success and it encouraged unity, fellowship, and a shared commitment to healthier living.
