Domino Servite School (DSS) in the KwaZulu-Natal Midlands achieved 100% bachelors degree passes for the third consecutive year last year despite challenges related to the Covid-19 pandemic.

Out of a class of 26 learners at the Christian-based independent school on the campus of KwaSizabantu Mission in the Kraskop area there were 66 distinctions.

Some of the top achievers were:

  • Liezl Green — distinctions for all seven subjects
  • Elsabé Pienaar — six distinctions
  • Annette Rümke –six distinctions
  • Four other learners achieved five distinctions each.

The DSS matrics were part of the Class of 2022, who, accordinging to Anne Oberholzer CEO of the Independent Examinations Board, were the group hardest hit by disruptions and other negative effects of the pandemic which broke in 2020 when they were in Grade 10.

Six of the school’s matric learners were in the top 1% for Afrikaans first additional language, computer applications technology, geography, isiZulu first additional language, isiZulu Home Language, and Mathematical Literacy. The 2022 cohort included four international learners, 15 from KZN, three from Gauteng, three from the Eastern Cape, and one from the Free State, representing six language groups. Their achievements are even more remarkable because DSS provides equal opportunities despite diverse academic backgrounds.

School principal Dorothy Newlands said: “I am delighted, once again, that God has added His abundant blessing, we honour Him for the results achieved in 2022. Much gratitude goes to each staff member, each parent and community member for their unstinting support and continued prayers. Congratulations, geluk, halala class of 2022!”

DSS was built in 1986 to serve the families of missionaries, mission personnel and businesspeople who live on the campus. Originally about 85% of the learners were from the local Zulu community but over time the demographics have changed and the school now also accommodates learners from other ethnic groups and from abroad.
