Protest planned outside PE court during “wife abuser” bail application

An application to stage a peaceful public protest against the bail application of alleged wife abuser, Frederick Gordon, on Friday, April 29, has been lodged by the Humewood Community Police Forum.

Community Police Forum chairman John Preller, has asked the Nelson Mandela Metro for permission to hold a peaceful demonstration of “no more than 100” concerned citizens outside the Magistrate’s Court in North End during the bail application of Gordon, who has been charged with attempted murder for allegedly severley beating his wife, Avril, with chains and a table leg and keeping her captive in a Forest Hill flat for more than three months.

In a letter to the metro yesterday, Preller appealed for lenience in granting the forum’s request “in view of the court’s decision being handed down at such short notice”. The bail application date was set when Gordon appeared briefly in the Port Elizabeth Magistrate’s Court on Monday, April 18. He was remanded in custody.
