SA Church Defenders planning Durban march for religious freedom

Thousands of Christians participate in a Pretoria march for religious freedom hosted by South African Church Defenders in October last year

South African Church Defenders (SACD) announced today they will host a major Christian march in Durban on March 12 to defend religious freedom and the independence of the Church.

The march, which will bring together Christian leaders, pastors and Christians from across SA is expected to be one of the largest Christian demonstrations in SA, says SACD in a media alert. Marchers will set out from King Dinuzulu Park at 9am and proceed to the Durban City Hall.

Over the past year, SACD has organised major peaceful marches in other parts of South Africa, including in Gauteng and the Western Cape, where thousands of Christian believers, pastors, and church leaders gathered in defence of religious freedom.

“These demonstrations were conducted lawfully and peacefully and demonstrated the growing concern among Christian communities about proposals and rhetoric that may lead to the regulation of churches by the state.

“The upcoming Durban march comes amid ongoing concerns regarding the conduct and posture of the Commission for the Promotion and Protection of the Rights of Cultural, Religious and Linguistic Communities (CRL Rights Commission) and its Chairperson, Thoko MkhwanaziXaluva.

“Christian leaders participating in the march will call for the immediate suspension and removal of the CRL Rights Commission Chairperson, Thoko Mkhwanazi-Xaluva, and will strongly oppose any attempts to regulate, control, or interfere with the internal affairs of Christian churches,” says SACD.

The SACD emphasises in its media alert that the upcoming march is not aligned to any political party.
“It is a movement of Christian leaders and believers who are standing together to defend the independence of the Church and the rights of Christian communities.

“Churches, pastors, and Christian organisations from across KwaZulu-Natal and other provinces are expected to participate under the banner: ‘Let the Church Arise’,” says SACD.
