ARTLC releases programme of Religious Freedom National Dialogue in Durban on Wednesday

The National Religious Freedom Dialogue in Durban will provide an opportunity for open and constructive discussion on matters concerning religious freedom, constitutional rights and the proposed regulatory framework affecting religious and traditional communities, says the African Religious and Traditional Leaders Council (ARTLC) in a media statement released yesterday.

The ARTLC says that media, political parties, faith leaders, clerics and interested stakeholders are invited to attend the dialogue at the World Gospel Impact Church, 61 Borough Road, Wiggins, Durban from 10am to 4pm on Wednesday October 28.

Dr Zweli Mkhize MP, chairperson of Parliament’s Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affaris (COGTA) will be the keynote speaker at the event. The dialogue is a sequel to a religious freedom imbizo hosted by the ARTLC in Cape Town on October 3 which was also addressed by Mkhize. Wednesday’s dialogue is being hosted by the ARLTC in collaboration with the Ethekwini Metro Interfaith Office.

The ARTLC says in its press release that the programme will focus on:
– CRL Rights Commission and matters relating to its role;
– Section 22 and the proposed regulatory framework;
– Previous submissions to Parliament and the way forward;
– The constitutional rights and responsibilities of religious communities; and
– An opportunity for stakeholders to share views, concerns and proposals.

Reverend Professor Musa Xulu, former chairperson of the CRL’s Section 22 Committee who resigned in January, saying that the controversial committee had a predetermined agenda, will be a guest speaker at the dialogue.

Other guest speakers are Reverend Dr Tanelle Welff-Dixon (DHL), ARTLC Women and Prophet Zandile Maphumulo, chairperson of the Ethekwini Metro Interfaith Office.

Bishop Templeton Mbekwa national president of ARTLC is the convenor of the dialogue and Queen Nosipho Mthembu ARTLC national coordinator is the co-convenor.

The ARTLC says the dialogue is intended to provide a respectful platform to discuss, different perspectives and meaningful engagement. It says further information can be obtained by emailing info@artlc.org.za.
