Take time out to smell the roses

Angus Buchan title[notice]A monthly column by farmer, preacher and writer  for Jesus, Angus Buchan[/notice]

Life is passing us by at such a hectic rate!  Many of us struggle to find the time to sleep, let alone to spend time in the presence of Almighty God.  Matthew 6:33, “But seek first the Kingdom of God and His righteousness, and all these other things will be added to you.”  One thing is certain, we have got to put God first.  We need to spend time on the mountain, every single day, before we go down to the valley where we need to roll up our sleeves and get stuck into the day-to-day ordinary tasks.

Jesus is our absolute example when it comes to spending time with His Father. Often, His disciples would be looking for Him.  A large crowd would have gathered on the shores of Lake Galilee to hear Him speak.  Eventually they would find Him up on the mountain, where He would be spending time with God.  They would say to Him, “Lord where have you been?  The people are waiting for you.” And He would answer, “I’ve been about my Father’s business.”  We need to hear from God before we start to give advice to people.  First, the mountain and then the ministry.  If we don’t put things in that order, we will wear ourselves out and we will have nothing left to give.

The same applies with your family. When the romance dies in the marriage, there is no marriage left. A special word to the men: we need to take time out to smell the roses.  Your wife needs you to be attentive to her. The Lord is very specific when He tell husbands to love their wives and wives to submit to their husbands. The Bible doesn’t tell wives to love their husbands, but the Bible tells husbands to love their wives.  Your wife needs your attention and your time, not just money.  The same thing applies with your children, they want you and not what you can buy them. So we need to start to take time out.

The Bible says; “For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul?” Mark 8:36.  Let us make a decision to allocate our time correctly: Firstly to God, secondly to your spouse, thirdly to your children and then everything else after that – that, by the way, includes your ministry.

We will be surprised when we put God first in our lives and give Him the best time of the day.  We will find that we will start to make rational decisions that work out for the best.  We will start to find that we have more time on our hands.  We will become less irritable.  We will become more positive with our outlook on life.  We will start to notice the roses and even take time to smell them. We will become sensitive to the little things that our families are doing for us.  We will become more appreciative of God’s creation around us.  Life will become much more pleasant and more beautiful.

I would really encourage you to start to put your priorities back in order today.  You will then find that everything will follow suit.

May God bless you as you continue to put Him first in your life.
