Chaos ensues as Upington community stands against controversial Bela Bill

Bela Bill public hearing in Upington on Thursday

Upington, February 23, 2024

In a dramatic turn of events at the Piet Thole Community Hall in Upington on Thursday, the community witnessed an intense showdown over the controversial Bela Bill, sparking outrage and accusations of rigging from concerned citizens.

The Bela Bill, particularly clause 39, has been a subject of heated debate, as it proposes secrecy from parents regarding pregnancies, allowing teachers to assist minors in receiving abortions without parental consent. This contentious issue drew members of #Hope4sa and various other organisations to oppose the bill.

Andrus Strauss, the premiere candidate for #Hope4SA in the Northern Cape, presented 64 petitions collected from concerned parents and teachers in Kuruman who could not vote the previous day. These petitions, symbolising widespread concern against the bill, highlighted the frustrations of those who were unable to participate in the voting process due to logistical constraints and lack of provision of voting papers.

However, as the opposition appeared to gain momentum with over 400 people showing up to voice their discontent, chaos erupted within the hall. Instead of stopping the disturbance and proceeding with the democratic process, the chairperson made a controversial decision to abruptly adjourn the session, leaving many community members feeling upset.

The abrupt departure of the chairperson led to accusations of premeditated rigging, with some community leaders openly speculating about the integrity of the process. Eyewitnesses reported overhearing discussions among certain individuals earlier in the day, raising concerns about the mobilisation efforts in favour of the Bela Bill. The chairperson also left the 64 petitions on the table.

Amidst the chaos, Andrus Strauss remained resolute, condemning the apparent disregard for democratic principles. “This was planned,” he asserted, indicating that the community’s voices would not be silenced. He vowed to escalate the matter to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP), signalling a determined effort to challenge the legitimacy of the proceedings.

“We are fighting for our children’s future,” Strauss emphasised, echoing the sentiments of many who fear the erosion of parental rights. “I do not want to see our beautiful country become like North Korea, where parents have no rights over their own children, please go and vote against the Bill for the future of your children and grandchildren.”

As the dust settles on this chaotic event, the battle over the Bela Bill continues to rouse passions and ignite calls for transparency and accountability in governance.

  2. I am against the BELA Bill.
There are too many clauses in it that I do not agree with: secresy over abetting under-age girls with abortion; abortion generally I am against; state taking control over our children and the subjects chosen for their education; sex education from seven years old; etc.

  3. I am against the BELA Bill in its entirety and if it goes through I will not abide by it.
